Adoption of the Three-Branch System
During the Enlightenment Era, Montesquieu, a French philosopher, believed that Rome fell because of the way they ran their government. He believed that the best way to run a government would be using a three-branch system. The idea behind the three-branch system is that the government can never get too much power or influence over its citizens because if one branch begins to get too powerful, the other branches can stop it before any damage has happened. This is the government system we use in the United States.
The three branches of the United States government are the Executive branch, Legislative branch, and Judicial branch.
The Executive branch enforces the laws that are proposed. This branch is composed of the President (head of the Executive branch) and his cabinet members (Secretaries of State, Treasury, Defense, etc.)
The Legislative branch proposes laws to be enforced by the Executive branch. The Legislative branch is composed of the House of Representatives and the Senate, which together form Congress. The Vice President is the head of the Senate.
The Judicial branch interprets the laws enforced by the Executive branch. The Judicial branch is composed of people appointed to their position by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate.
